Becoming a witness or observer

Becoming a witness or observer of your own processes and patterns of mind, coupled with meditation, is the key! It may be hard at first to conceive of this as something even practically possible, and it's tough to train yourself, but it is real and it does change you. You may not become rollickingly joyful and free just like that—you'll still have moods and still be "you"—but everything will be different. It's a major station along the way, and there's a real measure of peace and ease that arises in you at that station and then stays with you. If you really "get" this—meditation and witnessing—you'll never lose the progress you've made in getting to that point. It is a transformative step. It's like you've learned to ride a bike. Even if you never make the effort to try for the Tour de France, you'll never forget how to ride.
