An Open Letter to Capitalism

Dear Capitalism:

It didn’t have to be this way.

You could have tempered your love of money with more love of other fine things—tangible and intangible—like people, nature and ideas. We understand that humans do need to get credit for what they do, and that profit is one important form of exchange for effort, so we have no problem with rewards in principle. It’s just that we don’t think it has to be all about that all the time. We also know that advertising can be informative and/or allow services and products, such as many things online, to be offered gratis or at low cost, but we recoil at insidious manipulation. We can appreciate smart and ironic advertising, and you’d perhaps find that we’d respond better to that—to being treated with a bit more respect all around.

Now, we could go on about all sorts of other things, touching on every aspect of modern life on a small planet, but you know what’s right and wrong already. You can still change before it’s too late for you. Either way, we’ll go on one way or another, but we could make a pretty "yuge" deal right now, if you’re willing. I hope you are. Thank you in advance.

Sincerely yours,

Gabriel Fenteany
